This is no ordinary Director role within local government. It is a rare opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping a remote economy and creating positive change for current and future generations.

As Director, you will provide strategic oversight of Council’s business activities. You will assess and strengthen financial performance, identify growth and diversification opportunities, and ensure Council-owned ventures are well governed, financially stable, and delivering meaningful returns for the community.

About the Role

This role is unique! NPARC operates retail outlets such as a service station, supermarket and concrete batching plant, while also managing the famous Jardine River Ferry and Bamaga airport plus other community assets.

This is a newly created position. It will be hands-on, and you will be tasked with building an effective, local government directorate. You’ll be a practical and capable leader who will bring strong commercial acumen to oversee Council’s business operations, looking for ways to improve and ensuring the businesses are being managed effectively. You will also help identify new opportunities that create jobs, bring in income and support long-term community outcomes.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and guide Council’s enterprise activities and provide advice to the CEO and Council
  • Make sure business operations are safe, efficient and meet all requirements
  • Manage budgets and financial performance, and look for ways to improve results
  • Identify and develop new business opportunities for Council
  • Apply for grants and build strong relationships with partners and stakeholders
  • Support local jobs and encourage economic participation in the community
  • Ensure all activities meet governance, risk and workplace safety requirements
  • Lead and support staff, building a positive and accountable team culture

What’s on offer

This is a 3-year contract. A Total Remuneration Package consisting of $190,000 salary + leave loading + superannuation is offered.

With offices located throughout the Northern Peninsula Area and administration office in Bamaga, NPARC serves a close-knit population of approximately 3,000 residents across the communities of Bamaga, Injinoo, New Mapoon, Seisia and Umagico. Council delivers essential services across vast distances while balancing cultural values, community priorities and the practical realities of operating in a remote environment.
