Water Technical Officer

Warrumbungle Shire Council Full Time Permanent 28/08/2025

Salary Range: $1,148 - $1,310 per 35 hour week + superannuation

Are you passionate about water systems, problem-solving, and making a real difference in your community?

Warrumbungle Shire Council is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Water Technical Officer to help manage and maintain our essential water and sewer infrastructure. This role is perfect for someone who loves combining technical expertise with hands-on fieldwork, who’s not afraid to get into the data and the dirt!

In this dynamic role, you’ll work closely with our operations team to monitor system performance, support asset management and renewal planning, assist with compliance and reporting, and contribute to project coordination. From sampling and testing water, to investigating quality complaints, to analysing SCADA data and mapping infrastructure in GIS—this position offers plenty of variety and a real sense of purpose as you help ensure safe, sustainable services across the Shire.

To thrive in this role, you'll bring relevant qualifications in water operations, civil engineering or a related discipline—or be well on your way to achieving them. You'll need a solid understanding of water and sewer systems, compliance and water quality standards, and be confident analysing data to support operational decisions. Strong communication and record-keeping skills are a must, as is the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. A NSW Class C Driver Licence and White Card are essential, and if you’ve worked with GIS, SCADA, or asset management systems before, that’s a big plus!
If you’re looking for a role where your technical skills will be valued, your contribution will matter, and you can enjoy a great lifestyle in regional NSW, then we want to hear from you. Come join a friendly, professional team that keeps things flowing—for real.

This position can be located in Coolah or Coonabarabran. Both are vibrant rural towns in the beautiful Warrumbungle region of NSW, offering a high quality of life, welcoming communities, and stunning natural surroundings. Whether you prefer Coolah’s charming village atmosphere at the gateway to Coolah Tops National Park or Coonabarabran’s dynamic blend of science, culture, and access to the Warrumbungle National Park, both towns provide affordable living, excellent schools, and a relaxed country lifestyle. With strong community support, diverse local amenities, and plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities, either location offers an ideal setting to live, work, and thrive in regional NSW.

Selection criteria include:

  • Relevant qualifications in water operations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of water and sewer system operations, compliance requirements, and water quality standards.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills - ability to undertake system investigations, interpret data, and contribute to solutions for operational issues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, contractors and the community.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and maintain accurate records in a technical setting.
  • Understanding of WHS responsibilities and commitment to regulatory compliance in water and sewer services.
  • Current NSW Class C Driver Licence
  • Whitecard or willing to obtain.

It's a plus if you have experience with asset management systems, GIS or SCADA platforms (or similar).
