Drive Growth in Tourism, Renewable Energy, and Economic Development

Flinders Shire Council is seeking an exceptional leader to join our team as Chief Executive Officer. Nestled between Townsville and Mount Isa, Flinders Shire is home to the vibrant townships of Hughenden, Prairie, Torrens Creek, and Stamford. With a population of approximately 1,500 residents, our Shire thrives on industries such as cattle and sheep grazing, tourism, and renewable energy. Hughenden, the Shire’s main centre, sits along the Flinders River, offering unique geological features and significant prehistoric discoveries, making it a notable hub for transport and tourism.

As the Chief Executive Officer, you will be responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Council, ensuring alignment with legislative requirements and Council’s policies. Your role will involve acting as the primary link between Councillors and the organisation, providing leadership to staff, overseeing financial management, and promoting Council’s policies to the community. You will drive economic development, enhance staff engagement, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

You will also oversee the impacts of new energy and economic investment programs on the shire,  including multi-billion dollar private sector wind and solar projects including the State’s $5 billion Copper String 2032 project, constructing a power transmission line from Mt Isa to Townsville, with significant developments in Hughenden. Additionally, you will ensure Flinders benefits from the State Government’s Gulf Water reviews, securing water entitlements and infrastructure vital for the region’s economic development.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in an executive leadership role within a dynamic organisation, with a strong record of achievement. You will possess knowledge of contemporary corporate strategic, operational, and financial planning practices. Your ability to lead and influence people, manage organisational change, and communicate effectively will be crucial. Experience in local government is highly desirable, along with a tertiary qualification in Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
